Time line of the music video

 Timeline of Music video

As a production group we tidied up our ideas and made out a draft timeline for the music video.
Our music video timeline mainly divided into two big sections, so in the first section we only see the band in set 1 which is the basement area. In the section 2 when is after the first sound bridge (break) we introduced the set 2 and till ending.
The timeline is for help us doing shot list later, and coming up with the draft final visual of the music video.

Here is the draft handwritten timeline:

Here is the digital version for the timeline:

Casting

 Casting

For this band we need four members which are:
- lead singer
- guitar player
- bass player
- Drummer

In order to get the best casts, we did many testing with different people to see their vibe and how they react to the music.

Lead Singer:

 Leto Carter-Johnson

George Acworth

Ashton Henry-reid

 Reuben Davies
 Mateo Anibarro

Here are the people we asked to do the singer testing. The reason we found them because they do suit the vibe of our music video and all of them are confident in front of the camera.

Guitar Player

 Oscar Boatswain

 Felix Wood

 Troi Hector

 Molly Cadman
We have casted 4 people for guitar position. All fo them are good at guitar and able to figure out the chords for the music.

Bass Player

 Peter Ross

 Felix Wood

We casted 2 bass player, Felix tried guitar and bass to give us a better idea which role suits him more.

Drummer:

 Beau Gater

 Emmanuel Dyer-Grimes

 George Robertson

Here are the 3 drummer we have casted.

We have asked the instruments players to send us video of them playing instruments and we have lead singers meeting the production group up and testing with the song we are going to do.

We also tried to take different group pictures therefore to get the image of them standing together.

We came up with our top 4 choices for each position.
For lead singer we have Gorge Acworth.
He was the most confident and reliable person. He performed the song very well.

Guitar player- Molly Cadman
She bonds well with the lead singer which is very important for her to bond with the lead singer. She was excellent in guitar solo.

Bass Player- Felix Wood
He has a different character with the others and that can help us to form a more interesting band. His persona can be very helpful for the VCR section.

Drummer- Gorger Robertson
Compare to the other drummers he suits the band most and same as Felix their persona can bring more highlights to the group.

We also have our second choices for each position:

Lead singer : Ashton Henry-reid
Guitar:
Bass
Drum: Tommy

Here are the edited video we have put together.

Advanced Camera Workshop 1

 Camera Workshop 1

During this production we will be using BlackMagic 4k Mini URSA to film our music video.

We will be placing the camera on top of the tripod, to keep the camera still. The tripod is for the camera to keep the balance, and film in different height by changing the level of the tripod. At the bottom of the tripod there are three points where we can change the heigh of the stand by losing them.

Always start with setting up the tripod and after the stand is set we put the camera on. Setting up the spirit level just under the camera, this is for the camera is balanced on the tripod. Depending on the location we will be shooting, we should set the camera either outdoor or indoor. Therefore to get the right colour tone. By changing the exposure we can have the right lighting and make sure the video is well presented.

To focus the camera, we need to all the way zoom in and find the focus point then change to the frame we will be film in.

Shooting the music video we will have the camera connect to the monitor. On top left of the monitor there's shutter degree. Normally we have the shutter speed on 180 degrees, that is the neutral shutter speed. The lower shutter speed we have the sharper image we would have. Sharper image can make the image quality better, so it would be good for filming performance. Having the shutter speed on 360 degrees, the outcome will be blurry and smoother, this is for filming dream like or romantic scenes. For our group I think this will be better for the VCR section.
(monitor)

FPS (frames per second), in UK we will be using 25 FPS. The higher number we have the slower it gets. So the high number is for slow motion.

We will be using prime lenses for music video, for thriller we used zoom lens. Prime lens is fixed focus lens, it has specific job for each lens. The number on the lens means the mm of the lens. Every time we will need to turn off the camera when we change the lens.

During the time we are on set, we need to be careful that the lens box need to be fully closed, so when people move around the box the lenses will not fall out.

Because we will be using the prime lens this time so in order to the camera focused we will need to use tape measure. The tape measure should be place on the notes on the camera.

Measure the distance from camera to the artist, for getting focus to the artist.
using ft to measure the distance.

During the time we are on set we need to direct the artist/ band we are filming, where they need to be standing. This help us to get the best image and focusing the lens. We need to be telling them directly what they need to be doing and where they need to be standing.

Audience Mood Board

I have done a mood board to show what the audiences might expect and what their interests are. Which inlcuded: instruments, music playlist, concert's vibe, what they would expect the band to wear, their social media photos etc.

Audience profiling

Audience Profiling

There are two ways to look at the target audience, which are demographically and psychographically.

Demographically which is base on gender, age, class, race etc. For gender we have narrow to female audiences, as we are creating chill and teenage boy band. The boy band targeting male audiences has more rock and rebellious vibe within the band. The age we are targeting is 16-17 this range. The reason we narrow down to 16-17 is because the band is formed by 4 teenagers and age group above 18 has a huge gap between 16-17. Drinking and smoking are the things more likely to have in the video if we are aiming 18 and above age group. The other reason is that from 16years old, young people can starting to work. They can buy concert tickets and festival tickets by themselves. 15 years old is still at the stage during GCSE and that makes a huge difference to 16 years old as well. Parents will be less concern for age 16-17 go to concert as they are start to have their own job.

The most common way to see demographically is by JICNARS scale. This scale helps to divide up the social classes. Because of we are using 16-17 age group so we do not need to worry about the JICNARS scale becuase 16-17 young people are mostly in school and still not working full time.

Demographically, our target audience is female between 16-17 age group.

Psychographically is based on the audiences' values, beliefs, lifestyles, interests etc. This help us narrow down more from the wild range of 16-17 age group. Even in the same age group that does not mean all of them have the same taste of music. Breaking down the group, we can sue VALS scale.

For activity, I think audiences who like band definitely like to go to concert and festivals. These kinds of events are what they most likely to go to. Apart from this, the audiences might like to form their own band or hang out with friends who like to do music.

For behaviour I think most of them would be very playful. They would vibe with the music and be actively during concert events.

Our target audiences main interest is definitely music and the band. By listening to the band music they might like to play instruments as well. I think rock music is not a type of music that everyone listen to so our target audiences are mostly interested in rock music.

The band we are making is not a very heavy metal band so the audiences attitudes are no need to be rebellious. Our target audiences' attitudes can be very chill and thoughtful. As I said not everyone would enjoy rock music so our audiences might be very thoughtful because they have their own taste on music. They would so have strong opinions on music. Our target audiences might be less interested in pop or indie music as they are different from rock.

Their values could be the same value as the star image we are creating for the band or similar to one of the members. Because they would only like the band if they have the same opinions and values.

Legal letter of copyright

As a production group we are writing up a legal letter sending to the record label who owns the song we are making. The reason we are doing this is that given that we don't own the song, we need to get in touch with them and get the permission to use the song.

We have searched up the artist and the record label in order to get their email.

We found out the record label they belong to, Long Branch Record. From their website we found their email to contact with.

We wrote down our information and the track we are going to use in the email. Telling them what we are making with their song and they will be fully recognised in the pre-production and evaluation material that accompanies the project.

Here is the email we have wrote:

Research into generic conventions

Intro:

There are two types of conventions

- technical (camera, sound, editing)

- symbolic (mise- en -scene)

Reasons for codes and conventions:

- the audience can become familiar with a particular genre.

- The audiences would expect the structure and elements it has contains.

Why follow the conventions:

- the first reason would be less risky. As a new band/ artist by following basic conventions can get audiences whoever is fan of the genre. When the band becomes famous they can not follow the conventions as they know they have fans to support them.

Here is the genre convention presentation:

Feedback from the group pitch

As a group, we presented our full treatment of our song. We have got some feedbacks therefore to help us develop and improve our ideas.

General feedback:

The treatment is very clear, the concept of the music video works well. It is great that we thought about the details and how the music video will look like. We need to think about some details more and what we are exactly shooting.

Intro:

For the intro, we thought about opening the fridge and a member grab the drink. The feedbacks suggest that we should introduce the VCR, so later on when the VCR clips comes up it is not so sudden and random.

                         →

Elements:

Too many elements for a day shooting. We need to narrow down to about 3 elements for full performance and add in one extra element which is not performance.

We need to think about the elements as three lines so on the day for shooting we will be shooting three full performances.

what we need:

Performance 1: basement
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Performance 2: ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Performance 3: Set 2 performance
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
+
Extra element (VCR hand held)

Setting + Lighting

The setting needs to have more 90s aesthetic vibe. Consider about the posters, the colour scheme.

For set 1, the basement, we need to house light as they are rehearsing the performance. For set 2 we need to visually separate from set 1, make it seems like they are performing. The lighting in set 2 might need to be darker and dramatic.

The neon lights are not 90s so we need to think about what kind of lighting we can have for set 2.

Targets:

- Idea for intro

- List out activities they can do for VCR part

- Re-think about the performance 2

- Lighting for set 2

Development:

Idea for intro:

- the lead singer placing the VCR camera, and say into the camera, "where is my head take 1"

- go to his position and say to the members "Are we ready? 321 lets go"

Elements:

Performance 1:

The main element will still be the band performing in the basement.

.

Performance 2:

VCR hand held camera, the lead singer filming the members performing.

OR

The band singing into the camera without instrument. Maybe the lead singer mainly singing into the camera, the others dancing or grooving behind him.

 (without the VCR filter)

Performance 3:

Full performance in set 2.

Extra:

VCR hand held camera filming them hang out.

For the activities they can do in VCR part, we need to list out at least 20 exactly activities they can do. The list we have now is too pop not rock enough. We need to think about what they can do as they are a rock band.

List of things they can do:

Critical reflection

Our band is a pop rock band, within the products we made for the band, the key social groups we focused on are gender and age.The products a...
