Music Videos for the YouTube Age
YouTube is an American online video sharing platform, been created in February 2005. Google bought YouTube in November 2006 for US $1.65 billion, became one of the subsidiaries in the company. Before YouTube there are TOTP and MTV...
Top of the Pops (TOTP)
TOTP is an original BBC music chart television programme, weekly broadcasted between January 1964 and July 2006. Every week they put on the most popular music videos on the chart, which means not every videos will be seen by the audiences.
Here is an example of TOTP broadcast...
MTV
YouTube
Because of everyone got the same distribution, the videos need to be unique in order to stand out.
Many music videos are more known than the music, so it is important to make it unique therefore people would watch it over and over. The producer get the money from the views on YouTube.
Make the music videos catchy will need:
- Good music track
- promote your artists, in the video show what makes your artist stand out in order to let the audiences remember the artist.
First video of the artist - what are they trying to show
Ruel
First song: Don't Tell Me (July 2017)
In his first music video, we can see him all the way through. This is because they are trying to promote Ruel this artist. The audiences can tell that he is a teenage boy, in the beginning his parents are arguing and he leaves the house. I would think their target audiences are teenagers and young adults. First, is because the artist himself is a teenager at that time and parents arguing, leaving the house are stereotypical things happens in teenager time.
The genre of music is pretty clear shown in the video, pop, R&B, soul.
Jonas Brothers
First song: Mandy (December 2005)
In this video is also not much storyline, low budget. Mainly they are promoting themself. We can see three of them as a band, holding instruments.
